May Birchbox Unboxing

Birchbox is a monthly beauty subscription service where they send you anywhere from 4-6 full size or sample products. This service only costs $10.00 a month. I am subscribed to Birchbox and a similar beauty subscription - Ipsy. Next month I plan on subscribing the the Bluum box which is a monthly subscription box that sends items based on your child's age range. Alright, let's get into it!

This month I received five different products in my box. The design of the birchbox is a lot different this month and it seems to be a Kate Spade Saturday edition box. The also put a 25 dollar of coupon in my box for Kate Spade Saturday.
• LAQA & CO LIP LUBE: the makeup item this month is a sheer lip lube pencil. It smells of peppermint! This pencil glides on very smooth and you can twist the bottom for more product to come up. This seems to be either full size or a very good sized sample considering there is more product as you twist. A full size costs $18
•  SUPERGOOP EVERYDAY SUNSCREEN SPF 30: the skin care product I got for this month is a sunscreen, this is the second Sugargoop product I have received in my birchboxes. This sunscreen is oil free and water resistant. A full size of this costs $19
• BEAUTY PROTECTOR SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER: I got two hair care products this month and they are a matching sample set of shampoo and conditioner. I have been wanting to try this brand for a while I have heard great things about it. This set smells so delicious it's like a sweet smell. I can't quite describe it but I can't wait to use it! The full size of these products cost $21.95 each.
• 32 ORAL CARE BREATH CRYSTALS: for my lifestyle extra I received two packets of breath crystals one in lemon mint, and the other in spearmint. A pack of 15-60 of these costs $9.99-$29.99

That's it for this months birchbox! Stay tuned for my ipsy unbagging coming up later this month!

2 month baby update

Hey guys! So I am finally back with another baby update, and OH EM GEE so much has happened this month with my little guy. I swear it is amazing how fast they grow, like stop now! (but it's been cute) I remember at the beginning of this month I was stressing out about when Braydon was going to bless us with his first smile, and this month it finally happened! Now he is a smiley machine and I just love it.
As of last Tuesday the 4th he weighed 10lbs and 2oz. Like wow! He is still in 0-3 month clothing and size 1 diapers, which is nice because size 1 is what we have stocked up on the most.
This month I have noticed that Bray's eyes are definately blue, he doesnt fall asleep as easily as a newborn now. I have to actually turn lights off and rock him, and his favorite little soother comes in handy in that department(If you havent checked out my top 10 baby must haves please do!). This month we have gotten out of the house a lot more, we live right on the drive down beach so I have taken him on walks there and he loves it! Since he is more aware of his surroundings he has become more fascinated in tracking items so I have picked him up a few rattles and everything to help him work on that. Which by the way I will be putting up a baby consignment hall post  here in the near future.

The Necessities: Must Haves for Baby During the First Month

Hi Everyone! This is the second post in my series of "must haves". Here I've listed my top ten must haves for baby during the newborn stage. Please remember these are just items that I considered necessary for me and baby. A lot of these things just made my parenting experience easier and more enjoyable for both me and my son. So with that being said lets get started!

HUGGIES LITTLE SNUGGLERS:

For Braydons first month I tried a couple different brands of diapers, because he ended up having a sensitive bottom with a constant rash. I had tried the Pampers swaddlers which are amazingly soft but I had a few diapers leaks with them. Eventually I found that the huggies brand works best for his sensitive bottom, for the first month I used the Little Snugglers because they have the wetness indicator and still have a good amount of absorbency. Eventually I switched to the Snugg & Dry when he grew into size 1 diapers because they just whisk the wetness away so much better and I have never had a diaper blowout with these diapers. He hasn't had any sign of diaper rash since I started using the Huggies.

GRIPE WATER/GAS DROPS

I cannot express enough how much I love both of these products! They work like magic and have made Braydon such a happy little baby, and me a less stressed mommy. I first started using gripe water for Bray when I switched him to formula at 2 and 1/2 weeks old. I used it because it has no active ingredients and had heard a lot of good things about this product from other moms that I know. Maybe he is just a champ at taking medicine but he loves it its almost like he thinks its candy! I tasted it and it has a ginger ale sort of taste; anyways it calms his stomach instantly. The gas drops I was sort of hesitant to  try because it does have active ingredients and I didn't want to over do him on medicine in his first month of life. But after consulting my doctor I found that it is safe to put 1 infant gas drop into his bottle at every feeding, that way I don't have to wait till he is in pain from gas and have to calm him down or give him the gripe water. These products worked for me at different stages during the first month, if your baby has gas troubles or you're switching up their diet you should definitely ask their pediatrician about both of these products. The brand of gripe water I use is by Little Remedies and you can also purchase gas drops from them as well.

BABY EMERY BOARD:

I have been super afraid to clip Braydons nails since he has been born, but its something that has to be done because newborns like to scratch their faces up! It's terrible I know. Instead of using nail clippers I found that filing his nails down with a baby emery board works just as well and you dont have to live in fear of clipping your poor baby's finger off.

BLANKETS;

This one seems like a silly item to be on my top ten must haves but trust me baby blankets are a necessity! They are the one item that I feel gets dirty the quickest. They sometimes double as a burping cloth, or a sun shade, a nursing cover, you name it. Having a lot of them on hand will save you in doing a thousand loads of laundry and have a good variety for different needs. I've linked one of my favorite sets of receiving blankets up above and it is also pictured here.

NIGHT GOWNS/SLEEP SACKS:

My favorite piece of clothing to have Braydon in when he was a newborn was nightgowns! I just find them to be so easy to work with when you are a new mom and have trouble dressing your newborn. They also make diaper changes so much easier and they are way cute! To me it really isn't that practical to have a bunch of outfits for newborns because realistically you wont even be leaving the house with them that much in the first month and they grow out of that size so quickly. I've put a link to the cute set from gerber pictured here.

LAUNDRY SOAP:

I go through so many loads of laundry, having a baby. They spit up, and sometimes pee (especially boys!) all over, so its nice to have extra laundry soap. I use the Dreft brand because it smells like "baby" and is a gentle detergent that wont irritate Braydon's skin.
Ya can't live without laundry soap in your life when you have a newborn! (or at least I can't!)

BABY TYLENOL:

If you have a boy like I do then you may have him circumcised. Braydon was in a lot of pain due to his circumcision and therefore needed pain medicine. Hid pediatrician recommended he take some baby Tylenol for the first couple days. It sure helped him through that and I didn't have to hear his heart breaking cries for too long either. Obviously if you have a girl this won't be necessary but baby Tylenol is always good to have on hand in case of fever. Again this item is specific to my top ten must haves I it came in handy for Bray's first month. Remember to consult your pediatrician before giving your child any medications.

SOOTHER TOY:

One item that has become one of Braydon's soother's is a glowing seahorse that plays music. He loves that thing and it helps put him to sleep and keep him asleep! I think part of the reason for that is that we consistently put it in his crib and press it's tummy and it has become a predictable part of his bedtime routine. On the rare occasions where I have had trouble getting him to sleep this tow has come in handy. They way the sea horse's stomach glows is suppose to remind the babies of what they saw in the womb which is pretty neat. This is the exact seahorse that I got for Bray by Fisher Price and it plays soothing music and glows for five minutes.

SWING:

Since newborns sleep so much, it's nice to have other places to set them down other then in your bedroom so you can easily keep an eye on them but don't have to constantly be holding them. Having a swing for baby Bray has helped me get so much more done. It's nice to be able to set him down, do my housework and know that he is comfortable and occupied. The swing I have I got from my sister at my baby shower and I love it! It's the SnugaMonkey swing also by Fisher Price with three directional settings. I like that I can turn it to face the bathroom door so when I am home alone I can still take a shower but not be freaking out over whether or not the baby is okay.

NON-STICK GAUZE:

My final newborn must have is non-stick gauze pads!! Once again this is an item for circumcision care. After my Sons circ. his doctor had put plain old fashion gauze on the area and changing it was really painful for him because it stuck. It was bad enough that he was in pain without changing the gauze so I really didn't want to add to it. Jake and I went out and picked up some of these non-stick gauze pads and they work soo much better then regular gauze! They truly don't stick, which means less pain, and they are perfect size to cover the area. These were a life saver and an absolute must have if you are having your son circumcised. You can purchase these at almost any drugstore or grocery store. The brand I used was the Johnson&Johnson.

Thank you everyone for reading this little list! I hope it gives you some ideas of what you might want to have on hand if you're expecting. and please comment your must haves or what you used. I love hearing other people's opinions and sharing ideas! Stay tuned for my next post which will be all about Braydon's two month update! I am also thinking of doing a spring haul for mommy, and a consignment baby store haul here in the next couple weeks! Until next time!

The Necessities: Must haves for mommy during the first month

Now that Braydon is two months old we have gotten into a better routine and I have a better understanding of what you actually need to take care of your baby in the first month. I've come up with a list of baby must haves and mommy must haves for the first month and I have put in links to specific items if you're interested in checking them out. Keep in mind these are just things that I felt were necessary and really helped make my first month a little easier. Everyone has their own preferences and these are just specific things that stood out in making a difference for me and baby. This post is all about what "mommy" needs during the first month and on.

ONE MONTH MOMMY MUST HAVES:

SLEEP BRA: The first item I recommend getting is a good sleep bra. Even if you're not breastfeeding your milk is going to come in and it is going to hurt! I lived in my sleep bras for the entire first month. They were super comfortable and since I breastfed for the first month they were definitely essential. Make sure that in that first month your bras do not have under wire. It's just not practical to be sporting around a sexy push-up "nursing bra" in the first month. First of all you are going to be engorged and trust me comfort will be more important. Secondly you probably wont be leaving the house that much to care about the positioning of your breast, and lastly they do not have very good function. Even though they are made to clip down, the under wire and whatever padding get in the way of the job you are trying to perform. I really regret purchasing the nice looking but non-functional nursing bra that I got. Your can find comfy sleep bras almost anywhere; here is a link to one similar to what I purchased: nursing bra
3-IN-1 BREAST THERAPY: The Second item really helped me when my milk came in and when I had engorgement throughout the process of drying out my milk. The product is called TheraPearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy by Lansinoh. I really loved these because they are reusable gel soothing pads that you can heat up or freeze depending on your needs. It comes with a little chart that tells you how to use it for different problems you are having with your breasts; such as engorgement or mastitis. I used these consistently for the first week my milk came in and again consistently when I was drying my milk. This product soothed swelling and pain during that time. I can't imagine taking care of a newborn and dealing with those problems without any sort of relief.
DERMOPLAST ANTIBACTERIAL SPRAY: My number three mommy must have for the first month is Dermoplast Spray. The hospital gave me this to use after delivery and honestly it helped me so much those first couple weeks home. Especially if you have a tear this gives you some comfort. It's a hospital approved item for on contact pain relief and safe to use in that area. It was a definite must have for me in the first couple of weeks home.
BOPPY PILLOW: I got my Boppy as a gift at my baby shower and it sure has come in handy the past couple of months for me. The thing I love about it is that there are so many different uses. The one that I got is called the 2 sided soft and firm nursing pillow. Mine has a different cover then the one I linked here, but its the same exact design. This specific design is really neat because it has a removable firm insert for newborns and a softer general use pillow side. You don't have to breast feed to use the boppy either. It works great for bottle feeding, and as an infant seat. Boppy pillows are great for the first month when your baby is small and you are feeling a little unsure about how to position your baby for feedings. Now that Braydon is two months old I still get some use out of mine by positioning him for tummy time with it or supporting him in a sitting position.
CAMERA: As a new mommy I was and still am - obsessed with taking pictures of my baby! I have in the past had this overwhelming anxiety that I am going to miss documenting something very important in his development, and I just can't have that now can I? So I invested in a camera!! I got the Nikon coolpix L320
and I love it. now I can snap photos of him to my hearts content. I recommend getting some sort of camera or having a phone that takes nice pictures, because babies grow so fast and it can be nice to have those memories with them when they were so little forever at your disposal.

COFFEE: This probably seems really silly but coffee is one of my top ten must haves for the first month. I am not as health conscious as I would like to be but a cup of jo has gotten me through a lot of sleepless nights that you will encounter during that first month home with baby. I am a huge fan of coffee it gives me that extra energy boost you need when you don't have time for a healthier alternative. I drink Seattle's Best which you can find at almost any grocery store.

LANOLIN; During the first month and even throughout the first year if your breastfeeding, you are going to need a good lanolin nipple cream. They pretty much sell it at any drugstore or grocery store. The brand I used was again the Lansinoh brand. This cream helps to sooth your sore, dry, and cracked nipples when you are breastfeeding. This cream creates a chapstick like barrier on your nipples and is non-toxic to your baby. It's pretty much a necessity for breast feeding moms, especially during the first month when your nipples are the most sensitive and getting use to feeding.
CONCEALER: I became pretty dependent on using concealer since having a baby. Even though I am young, having no sleep and parenting stresses can really ware on your face. Even though beauty isn't everything, you don't want to scare away your precious baby's guests when they come to visit. Since parenting a newborn doesn't leave you much opportunity to get completely ready as you would like, throwing on some concealer can do wonders for your looks and self esteem. I use the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer available at most drugstores.

BABY JOURNAL: My mother purchased me a baby journal called Taking Care of Baby: The Ultimate Organizer for Busy Parents that I used to document Braydon's dirty diapers, feedings, and sleep pattern. This was a good tool for me as a new mom because you can't really measure how much your baby is getting when you are breastfeeding and tracking his diapers and feedings not only put my mind at ease but it helped me to identify his schedule and become more confident in knowing when he was going to need certain things. I definitely recommend getting either an app or a written journal to do this, especially if you are a first time mom like me.
A FRIEND: My last mommy must have is simply the help of a good friend, or someone you can call to vent to or help you at home. I have really appreciated the help of my sister and it has gotten me through a lot of emotional breakdowns and she made sure we didn't drown in our own mess either.

Thank you guys for reading MY 1 month must haves for mommies. I wanted to show some different items that I dont see a lot of people mention in these types of posts, but are still very essential and were something I used or am still currently using on a daily basis. Stay tuned for my next post which will be on Baby's 1 month must haves and Braydon's 2 month update!

"What's for dinner babe?"

I usually don't cook dinner at our house, but since I have taken the role of "stay at home mom" I decided to change that. Jake asked me what we were having for dinner tonight so I got on my favorite site Pinterest to go through the many recipes I had pinned (but never thought I would make) and found a crock pot recipe for sweet BBQ Hawaiian chicken.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4-6 boneless chicken breasts (I used 2 since it is only me and Jake at home)
  • 1/3 cup of BBQ sauce
  • 1 20oz can of pineapple chunks that have been drained
  • 1/3 cup of soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1tbsp corn starch

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Let chicken thaw out overnight
  2. add all ingredients and the chicken into your crock pot
  3. give it a little stir so that all your chicken is covered in the sauce
  4. let cook on low for 8 hours
  5. serve over rice and/or vegetables
* on a side note I cooked my chicken breast whole so that Jake and I could each have one, but if you're serving a larger group or just want to make leftovers easier to store you should cut your chicken up smaller.

This is what mine looked like when it was done. Not the best plating, but it was delicious!

This recipe is really simple and was made from ingredients I already had in my pantry. You can find the original recipe and many more cost saving crock pot recipes on this website: femiology.com

Mamma Crafts: DIY Sugar and Flour Canisters out of Formula Containers

Today I up-cycled a couple of my old formula containers into flour and sugar canisters. This is a very simple and budget friendly craft for mommies. Plus you could use them for almost anything I just chose to do kitchen canisters because I do not own any. Let's get started!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
  1. A couple formula containers( i used the ones from Similac because that is what my baby drinks)
  2. Construction/scrap booking paper
  3. Scissors
  4. Tape/glue
  5. A permanent marker(regular markers will work too)
  6. Printer paper

Step one:
After you choose what paper design you are going to use lay your container flat on the construction or scrap booking paper and mark with your marker where you will need to cut, then cut along that line. You could use a ruler for this but I prefer to eyeball it.

Step two:
Take your cut paper and wrap it around the formula container and tape it down. You could use glue or a glue stick instead of tape, but I find it messy and it doesn't stay in place as well.
Step three:
Cut out a rounded piece of printer paper that will fit onto the top of the formula lid and write the name of the container's contents. This will not only hide the name of the formula brand, but also give you a clear indication as to what is inside of the canister's. I got lucky and happened to have two different colored lids on my containers because I had switched Braydon's formula at one point, so mine came out color coded.
Step four:

Once you have your labels written out; roll up some tape and stick it on the back of the paper, then apply it to the top of the container lid. I like doing this more then using glue because it makes it easier to change out the labels as the contents change.

Step five:
The final product is almost done! All that's left to do is add the contents and place your new fun canisters in the kitchen for display!(oh...and so you can get your flour and sugar easier, don't you just love the tbsp. scoops?!)
